Some people thrive on being in the heat, like the all the players at the 2021 DakotAbilities Golf Classic on June 7.
Then some of us find a cool place to sit and try to name as many songs with the word 'summer' in the title as we can. Wanna play? Here are four to start with then you add more. Summertime from Porgy and Bess Boys of Summer Don Henley Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer Nat King Cole Summer in the City Lovin' Spoonful
Which ones did you think of? Let us know here!
Monday, June 7 was hot but so were the golf teams. The top two flight winners were WorkFORCE (left) and Great Plains Dental.
Thank you to all of the teams and sponsors for a successful day. A very special thank you to our volunteers! We had several DakotAbilities staff members and groups from American Bank & Trust as well as Great Western Bank.
Gardening Shoots Up Like a Weed!
We're all thumbs. Green ones!
When we started our gardening program five years ago, four individuals we support participated. Now, nearly everyone does. In addition to Longfellow Center, seven of our 14 houses now have gardens or pots. One person we serve has even volunteered to come to Longfellow Center on weekends to water!
Follow That Dream!
Letitia has always known what she wants to do - work with dogs. She started working at South Central Veterinarian Clinic is April with assistance from Vocational Rehabilition. She assists with feeding, cleaning kennels, and interacting with the dogs. Her first paycheck was a happy, proud milestone for her.
Competition at Its Best
Miracle League is in full swing (pun intended)! Join us throughout June on Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at the Frank. L. Boyce field north of Terrace Park. Games start at 6:00pm and 7:00pm. You will experience baseball like never before. Emily (who receives services at DakotAbilities) joined a team for the first time this year. The next day she said, "Man, those people are competitive!"
Investing in Our Future
Emma Siedschlag and Natalie Miller are the recipients of the LPN Build Dakota Scholars. DakotAbilities has teamed up with Build Dakota in order to keep our medical services strong. Upon completion of their training, they will work for DakotAbilties for at least three years.
We have been telling you for two months about our Living the Mission program where staff members are nominated by peers or by anyone in the community who is impressed with an outstanding work ethic and a commitment to the people we serve. There were eight nominees for June and the winner is (drum roll)
Ginger works in Nursing Support and schedules office visits for the people we serve as well as accompanies them to appointments. Ginger received this nomination from Dr. Jaclyn Schuler of Dakota Dental: "I am a dentist that sees numerous patients from your organization. Any appointment that Ginger attends go much better than those she is not in attendance for. She knows and cares deeply for the people she serves. She understands the importance of getting a good cleaning or a procedure accomplished. She jumps in to help us and knows where all the supplies are in our room to help make the appointment a success. She is professional, courteous, compassionate and a strong advocate for her clients."
Ginger indeed "lives the mission". She will receive a cash prize and DakotAbilities logo wear.
Do you know a DakotAbilities staff member you would like to nominate? Just click on the Living the Mission logo and complete the nomination form.
Summer is officially here on Saturday! Enjoy!
