How is your holiday spirit?

Every family has their own traditions leading up to the holidays. Some have small celebrations every day with an advent calendar. Some send Christmas cards to family and friends for that once-a-year update. Whatever your level of joyful anticipation is for the most wonderful time the year, you simply will not be able to surpass the heightened excitement in all of our homes and Longfellow Center. Everyone is busy with holiday baking, shopping, special art projects, and attending community plays and events. The Activities Room at Longfellow Center created a memory tree. They hung photos of several people we supported that we have lost in the last few years. It makes us all feel they are celebrating with us once again. We hope your own spirit is every bit as joyful!

We Took A Village

We had an entire village donated to us by John and Jessie Schmidt. It is set up in and around the office at Longfellow Center and attracts a lot of attention. Looking at it, one gets the feeling of being in Merrie Olde England.

Last Saturday the Young Professionals Network held their holiday Kringle party at the Old Courthouse Museum. Attendees brought games and crafts to be donated to DakotAbilities. Shown is Andrea Carstensen, Jennifer Smith Hoesing (our Director of Development), and Nichelle Lund. Thank you!

Gone But Still Giving

Last week we received two large gifts from trusts.

JaNelle' Baete was a nurse with DakotAbilities for 29 years. She passed away in 2020. JaNelle had many, many friends at DakotAbilities and cherished her time here. Her niece, DenYelle, wanted JaNelle's trust income to benefit the people we serve.

Gil and Dorothy Koepsell were active in our community and supported many causes they believed in. They both passed in 2021. Their son, Randy, said his parents always appreciated the work DakotAbilities does and wanted to share their estate with us.

Both families agreed that the most impact would be in donating to our Capital Campaign, Independence & Dignity Through Personal Space.

The campaign is for renovating and adding on to four of our homes. The goal is to give everyone we support the opportunity to have their own room. One home was completed over the summer and the other three will be done as there are funds available. If you would like to be part of this major project, you can indicate supporting the Capital Fund on your donation, or contact Nathan Stallinga or Jennifer Smith Hoesing.
